Before you buy anything or sign anything, figure out which problem you actually have.
One picture that helps
A ranch with brick and a basement is not one big empty room. One router in the living room is like one lamp in the front of a long hallway — the far end stays dark. That’s coverage. If the lamp itself is out, that’s an outage. Different fix.
First: coverage, outage, or the company box?
- If every device in the house is dead at once, check Spectrum (or whoever you pay) for an outage before you buy gear.
- Still dead with no reported outage? Unplug the company modem/router for 30 seconds, plug it back in, and wait until the lights settle. If the whole house comes back, it was the box — not a dead room and not a reason to buy mesh.
- If the living room is fine and only one room fails, that’s coverage — not “the internet is bad.”
- Move the router out of the cabinet, off the floor, and out from behind the TV. Higher and in the open. That alone fixes more than people expect.
Write the network name and password from the sticker on the company box. Keep that card in a drawer — not on the fridge.
What usually fixes a dead room
Buy a mesh set: two or three matching units from the same brand. One where the internet comes in. One halfway toward the bedrooms. A third only if the basement or garage still fails.
Same brand, same set. Match it to your floor plan and what you already rent. No brand shopping list here.
Traps
- Cheap “extenders” that create a second network with `_EXT` in the name. Phones join the wrong one and nothing feels fixed.
- Sticky-note passwords on the fridge.
- Door-to-door fiber pitches (Kinetic, TFiber, MetroNet, T-Mobile, whoever shows up). They may be fine products. They are still a sales visit. You do not have to decide on the porch. Ask for paper, check whether your street is actually built, and compare it to the bill you already pay — on your time, not theirs.
Done means
You can stream or join a call from the back bedroom without walking to the living room.
Or you know it’s a real outage (or a reboot fixed the company box), and you’re not buying mesh or signing fiber to fix that.
