Back up family photos

Put family photos in a second place — phone cloud or a computer — so they are not only on the phone.

Family photos should live in more than one place. Pick one second place — phone cloud or a computer — and turn it on. This is not a full library class, and not a sales pitch for more storage.

Do the steps for your phone. Skip the other.

iPhone (iCloud Photos)

  1. iPhone: Open Settings.
  2. iPhone: Tap your name at the top.
  3. iPhone: Tap iCloud, then tap Photos.
  4. iPhone: Turn on iCloud Photos.
  5. iPhone: Leave the phone on Wi‑Fi for a while so the upload can finish. Open Photos later and confirm recent shots still appear.

If iCloud says you are out of space, free space first or use the computer option below — do not buy storage just because an ad says so.

Android (Google Photos)

  1. Android: Open the Google Photos app.
  2. Android: Tap your profile picture (top right).
  3. Android: Tap Photos settings, then Backup.
  4. Android: Turn on Backup.
  5. Android: Prefer Wi‑Fi only if you see that option, so the upload does not use your cell data.

Optional: copy to a computer

  1. Plug the phone into a computer with a cable.
  2. Unlock the phone and allow the computer if asked.
  3. Copy the DCIM or Photos folder to a folder on the computer (or an external drive).
  4. Open a few files on the computer to confirm they open.

What this guide is not

Not a paid storage pitch. Not “delete everything after.” Not a tablet deep-dive.

Done when

A recent family photo exists somewhere besides only the phone — iCloud, Google Photos, or a computer folder you can open.
