Who’s who (plain)
You’ll mostly hear about chat tools from companies like OpenAI (ChatGPT), Google (Gemini), Anthropic (Claude), Microsoft (Copilot), Meta (Llama / Meta AI), and xAI (Grok). Same basic idea: next-word machines with different apps wrapped around them.
You do not need all of them. One free or included tool is enough to learn.
What “frontier” means
“Frontier” is marketing language for “among the newest / strongest models right now.” It changes often. It does not mean the tool is always right, safe with your secrets, or better for your exact job.
What to ignore for now
Rankings, scoreboards, and “this one is god-tier.” Pick one tool, learn the basics from What AI actually is and When AI sounds sure and is wrong, then decide if you need another.
Done when
You can name a few providers and treat “frontier” as a buzzword, not a guarantee.
